Fall fashion’s key thread strength and power with dose of urban femininity

Bold. Strong. Powerful but feminine.

Those are the key words that frame the fall 2012 fashion collections shown during Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week. The eight-day event, which ran Feb. 9-16, saw the visions of fall from more than 250 labels.

Designer labels showing this season included some of the biggest names in the industry, including Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, Diane von Furstenberg, Carolina Herrera, Carmen Marc Valvo, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Stephen Burrows and Tommy Hilfiger.

Other key labels and designers showing included Pamella Roland, Elie Tahari, Reem Acra, Tracy Reese, Peter Som, Monique Lhuillier, Badgley Mischka, b Michael America. A coterie of alums from the popular fashion reality show "Project Runway" also were part of the New York Fashion Week scene, including Irina Shabayeva, Epperson, Christian Siriano and Korto Momolu.

Of course, with such a varied group of designers and labels, key themes and trends sometimes seemed a bit all over the place.

For every ladylike sleek sophisticate seen in collections like those from Carmen Marc Valvo, Carolina Herrera and Diane von Furstenberg, there were funky, colorful urban women bounding down the catwalk in collections like those from Tracy Reese and Nicole Miller. Somewhere in between was a brand of easy, contemporary chic offered in collections like those from Elie Tahari and Michael Kors.

Again, the spectrum was wide. Tahari's silky color-blocked separates — in groupings of teal with purple and green and hot pink with red, purple and orange, were polar opposites from the explosion of oversized ski lodge-chic plaid pieces offered by Michael Kors.

But the key thread running through these two as well as most of the other collections seen this season was a sense of strength and power presented with a definite dose of urban femininity. You cannot be a shrinking violet in one of Kors' lumberjack plaid showstoppers.

Repeatedly, the feminine ideal celebrated by designers at New York Fashion Week was a more grown up, sophisticated real woman whose clothes reflect the reality of her life.
