Thundering Herd women slip past Ball State, 60-58

MUNCIE, Ind. — The Marshall women’s basketball team connected on key free throws in the closing minutes and celebrated New Year’s Eve with a 60-58 victory over Ball State on Saturday at Worthen Arena.

Jasmine Shaw led the Thundering Herd (9-3 with 12 points. Victoria Wells added 11 and Alyse Poindexter 10. Erica Woods had one of the best games of the year on the boards, recording a career-high 14 rebounds. She got nine on the offensive glass and 10 overall in the first half.

«It was a mental toughness win for us,» Marshall coach Royce Chadwick said. «It was a very gritty performance by a team that decided to lock it down in the last five minutes. The defense was spectacular in the last five minutes. Players stepped into roles when they needed to and made spectacular plays when they need to especially on defense.»

Rashedah Henriques converted a put-back lay-up with 4:00 left to put Marshall ahead, 51-50. From there, the Cardinals (5-8 had to foul and the Herd made seven free throws in the final minutes to hang on.

Jazmin Hitchens led the Cardinals with 17 points and seven rebounds. Shanee’ Jackson chipped in with 12 points.

Ball State built a 9-point lead (50-41 thanks to two jumpers from Mercedes Miller, but Marshall responded with a 10-0 run to regain control. The game was tied again at 54-54 with 1:44 left, then the Herd scored four of the next five points.

The game was the second half of a men’s-women’s doubleheader. In the men’s game, Ball State beat Chicago State, 86-58.

Marshall will open Conference USA play Thursday at Houston.
