John Travolta’s Stolen Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Returned, But In Pieces

Mercedes-Benz 280 SL

That was fast. Last September, John Travolta reportedly left his classic Mercedes-Benz 280 SL convertible parked on a residential street in Santa Monica, California, for just 10 minutes, but that's all the time it took for it to get stolen.

Unfortunately for the actor, his 280 caught the attention of two men that were allegedly involved with a car theft ring that targeted classic and muscle cars. However, the two men were arrested and Travolta's timeless Benz was recovered — albeit in pieces. Numerous parts were recovered, but not the entire car. Video footage of the suspects driving off with the vehicle played a key part in recovering the vehicle, which also led authorities to find eight other stolen cars and miscellaneous parts from other vehicles.

Thanks to an increase in law-enforcement efforts to shut down car theft rings, auto theft has recently been on the decline. A report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau released last summer revealed U.S. automobile theft in 2010 fell 7.2 percent year-over-year, reaching the lowest rate since 1967.
