Energy efficiency, outdoor living areas, and making more efficient use of existing space are a few trends seen at this year's HBA Home Show at the Springfield Expo Center, said Matt Morrow, Home Builders Association CEO. "Efficiency and value are key," he said.

Murphy beds have become a popular choice for rooms that are doing double duty, such as a combination office and spare bedroom, said Telly Parisse, of Smart Design Closet Co.

"People are no longer designing for the next person that lives in their house," said Crystal Shotts, of Southern Materials Company. Instead, many homeowners are making improvements for their own comfort because they plan to stay in their homes for the foreseeable future.

Terry Dean, of Metro Appliances and More, said people are spending a lot on remolding to make the kitchen the heart of the home by expanding and combining dining, kitchen and living areas. Morrow expects Home Show attendance to exceed last year's, pointing to a "shift in psychology," he said. "Recessions are over when people get tired of them and I think we're all pretty tired of this one."

The three-day Home Show ended Sunday.
