«The thief abandoned the Benz after using it extensively. It was identified by the local police based on the chassis number and we were informed. But the thief still remains unknown,» CCS automobile inspector M Ravinder Reddy told TOI.
According to police, the abandoned car did not have a number plate. The car is owned by a textile businessman Tarun Gupta. «The thief stole the car by using the original key. How he managed to get access to the key remains a mystery,» the police said.
Apparently, 20 cars went missing in 2011 and still remain untraced. Recently, CCS officials had carried out a search operation in parking lots of various railway stations and bus stations in the city and traced nearly 100 abandoned vehicles. All these were found to be stolen and abandoned by thieves.
The data of the recovered vehicles have been uploaded on the police website for the public to crosscheck, the police said.
