The new Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS rules, set for the spring, should offer a welcome «shot in the arm» for small businesses and venture capital, according to Chris Godfrey of law firm Burges Salmon in Bristol.
The EIS is designed to help smaller higher-risk trading companies to raise finance by offering a range of tax reliefs to investors who purchase new shares in those companies.
Godfrey, the head of corporate finance, acted, on behalf of the management shareholders, on the MBO of specialist gas supplier A-Gas, which scooped the Deal of the Year at Insider’s South West Dealmakers Awards 2011.
«Joint-venture activity remains strong, as businesses find other ways of collaborating and we are hopeful that the new Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS rules, which come into effect in the spring, will be a welcome shot in the arm for smaller companies and venture capital,» he told Insider.
«Despite all the doom and gloom in the national press, my impression is that most of our clients are hanging on in there and biding their time – and I would not blame them for that. Now is not a good time to take risks unless you have very deep pockets.
