Coast players lend a hand in Alabama, LSU’s football success

He caught one pass for 10 yards this season.

Should Alabama (11-1 win, former D'Iberville wide receiver Kevin Norwood will have two rings. The redshirt sophomore was redshirted on the Crimson Tide's national title team in 2009. Norwood has seven catches for 112 yards this year.

Terrance Cody, who played nose tackle at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, played a key role on the Crimson Tide's national title team two years ago.

LSU had two South Mississippians on its 1958 national title team that featured the "Chinese Bandits." Right guard Ed McCreedy of Biloxi was a starter. Center Ken Wittmann of Pass Christian was also on the squad.

Stephen Peterman, a former St. Stanislaus standout, was a starting guard on the Tigers' team that captured a national title in 2003. Peterman is now a starter at right guard for the Detroit Lions.

"It was unreal," Peterman said. "It was one of the greatest moments in my life. I got married that year and had my first son that year. It was a great year that I'll never forget."

Sean Merrill, who played at D'Iberville, was also redshirted on the national title team coached by Nick Saban.

Three local players starred on LSU's national title five years ago: wide receiver Demetrius Byrd (Pearl River Community College and tight ends Mit Cole (Picayune and Richard Dickson (Ocean Springs.

During the 2007 season at LSU, Byrd caught 35 passes for 621 yards and seven touchdowns.

"It was an awesome experience for me to win a national title," Richard Dickson said. "I'm glad my brother is getting to play in one too."

During his career at LSU from 2005-09, Richard Dickson ended up as the most productive tight end in school history as he caught 90 passes for 952 yards and 10 touchdowns.

He capped his sophomore season with a pair of touchdown catches in the BCS national championship game victory against Ohio State.

Alabama's back-to-back national title teams in 1964 and 1965 featured fullback Steve Bowman of Pascagoula and guard Jackie Sherrill of Biloxi.
