NEW ORLEANS — Shutting down the LSU running game will be key for Alabama if it hopes to win the BCS National Championship Game on Monday at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
The Crimson Tide knows if it can shutdown Spencer Ware, Kenny Hilliard, Alfred Blue and Michael Ford, the front seven has the ability to get pressure on quarterback Jordan Jefferson.
For that reason, slowing the four running backs has been a focus for Alabama during bowl preparations.
"That's been our main focus coming from the last game (a 9-6 overtime loss to LSU on Nov. 5: stop their power running game, then we worked on their option," Alabama linebacker C.J. Mosley said today during media day for the title game. "We're ready for any kind of trick plays and we've worked on their (three-receiver formations because they didn't really do much of them last time."
Forcing three-and-outs is the main goal of the defense. Consistently denying first downs will give the Tide's offense field position, and hopefully result in an Alabama lead. Mosley said he thinks getting a lead on Monday night will make the defense even stronger.
"It would be big because it would make them more one-dimensional," Mosley said. "They'd have to pass more and couldn't be as conservative, and that plays more into our game plan than theirs."
Alabama's defense has used its own stable of running backs — Heisman Trophy finalist Trent Richardson and Eddie Lacy, in particular — to help get ready for the game. Mosley thinks facing such competition day in and day out will help the Crimson Tide capture the program's second BCS title in three years.
"It's very similar," Mosley said, comparing LSU's running game to Alabama's attack. "They have great running backs and great linemen just like we do, so it helps knowing we're going against a top offense every day in practice.
