Reed says being ‘smart’ key for BCHS runners in region

GLASGOW —
Honestly, there isn't much for Terry Reed to do this week as head cross country coach at Barren County High School. The Trojans and the Trojanettes will be competing in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Class 3A Cross Country Region Championship Saturday at Kereiakes Park in Bowling Green and, as of right now, its all up to the runners. It is too late for any real coaching now. Either they're ready to run or they're not.

"There really isn't much coaching to do now," Reed said. "You have to be focused, mentally ready to run."

The Trojanettes will run at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday with the Trojans going off at 10:15 a.m. The top four teams and the next five individuals (not on a qualifying team will qualify for the state championship which will be held Nov. 12 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

Reed said the Trojanettes, who qualified for the state meet by one point last year, will be competing against some of the best teams in the state, including Bowling Green, Central Hardin and North Hardin. He said the Barren County girls will need to be on top of their game.

"For us to feel comfortable about making it to the state meet, we need to finish in the top three teams Saturday," said Reed. "I think we will have to have a great day to accomplish our goals."

Competing in the regional meet for the Trojanettes will be: Megan Bunch, Taylor Davis, Ally Davis, Taylor Montgomery, Shayna Billingsley, Deleashia Reynolds and Olivia Houchens.

"They have a very good course at Kereiakes Park and it is tough for the runners," said Reed. "You have to run smart to beat this course. Ideally, you want to stay in contact with the fourth place team until just past the midway point and then begin to pull away on the final third of the course."

Reed said he's been very proud of the way the Trojans have worked throughout the year and the way they have improved. He is hoping that improvement helps Barren County sneak up on the talented teams in the boys division, teams like Greenwood, North Hardin, Bowling Green and Grayson County.

"For the boys team, we have to come out and run as close as possible to the fourth place team on Saturday," Reed explained. "And then we may be running very well and one of the other teams may be having a bad day.

Mason Dunbar will be heading up the Barren County boys contingent at the regional competition. Joining Dunbar will be Seth England, Eric Skipworth, Eric Massengill, Billy Mowery, Ryan Burns and Dylan Howard.

"The boys have a little bit of an advantage with this course because we've run on it before," said Reed. "However, it is going to be tough for us. It all comes down to how much competitive spirit and mental toughness these boys and girls have inside them.
