There are certain things that are endemic to a particular culture, and can get mis-interpreted or lost in translation when put in the context of a foreign culture. Despite the many other similarities between the UK and the USA, it seems like the blokes on "Top Gear" mis-applied the term "musclecar" when referring to the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, or so claims Gyro231995.
There's no debating the "muscle" part of the equation, as the AMG produces well over 500 horsepower from its (now twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8. And nobody accused the previous 6.2-liter naturally-aspirated AMG engine of being a lightweight, either. But regardless, Mercedes' "musclecar" is pushing the high end of the five-figure range, nudging close to six-figure territory.
One of the key components of the traditional American musclecar formula is (relative affordability, and with the 2012 Mustang GT, Camaro SS and Challenger R/T all starting in the low $30,000 range are about a third of the AMG's princely sum.
So do you think Jezza, the Hamster and Captain Slow got it wrong in calling the AMG a "musclecar" or do you think the use was appropriate, considering the car's formidable performance? Share your thoughts on today's Thread of the Day below!
