Smart Meters Spark More Debate

A regional manager with Southern California Edison says the state’s Public Utilities Commission is considering opt out options for customers concerned about smart meters.

In the meantime smart meter critics should call Southern California Edison to be put on a delay list. If you are put on a delay list, SCE will install a tag, so a smart meter is not put in. The number for the delay list for English is 1-800-810-2369, Spanish 1-800-477-4455.

SCE has contracted with a company called Corix to install the smart meters.

The Vice President of the Company says their trucks made about 70 stops today in the Santa Barbara area.

Some people contacted KEY News saying they are concerned about radiation and privacy issues.

Another told Key News she was worried that enemies of the U.S. could turn off the power.

But supporters say they think the smart metering program will help the state upgrade the grid.

SCE workers have compared the radio frequency to baby monitors, cell phones and WiFi areas.

Even so, critics who don’t buy that hope to see an affordable option.
