THE head of Scotland's largest teaching union is to step down after 17 years in the post.
Ronnie Smith, general secretary of the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS, is to retire at the end of March.
Mr Smith was a key architect of the 2001 McCrone Agreement on teachers' pay and conditions, which ushered in a period of stability after decades of rancour.
Mr Smith, pictured, also served for five years as president of Education International Europe (ETUCE, making a major contribution to international teacher trade unionism.
Alan Munro, president of the EIS, said: "Ronnie Smith has worked in senior positions within the EIS for 24 years and for 17 years as general secretary.
"During this time he has made an immense contribution to the EIS, national and international education.
"He is held in great respect within the world of education and the wider trade union movement. "
A former teacher of Latin and modern studies, Mr Smith joined the EIS in 1973 and was an active member of the West Lothian local association.
He joined the full-time staff of the EIS as assistant secretary in 1988, and was appointed general secretary in 1995.
The EIS emergency committee met yesterday to consider a timetable for the appointment of Mr Smith's successor, who is likely to be appointed in January.
