BERNARDS TWP. – Two luxury cars with a combined
value of approximately $165,000 were stolen from a residential
driveway near the Bridgewater Township border on Thursday night,
Dec. 22, according to police.
Police said that at 8:55 p.m., a 48-year-old resident of Kings
Ridge Road reported the theft of a tan 2011 BMW and a black 2010
Mercedes Benz, both of which were registered to him.
The victim told police that with the Mercedes already parked
there, he parked the BMW in the driveway at approximately 8:15 p.m.
and was notified by his son at 8:55 p.m. that both vehicles were
being driven out of the driveway.
The victim was able to see both vehicles heading toward Deer
Ridge Road – which runs from Mountain Road south to Washington
Valley Road in Bridgewater – at a high rate of speed, police
said.
The victim said the driver's key fobs were left in both vehicles
at the time of the theft, police reported. He also said that as he
had driven on Kings Ridge Road toward his home, he had seen an
unfamiliar vehicle, which he described as a brown older model sedan
that may have been occupied by three individuals.
Police Lt. Ted Reese said his department was trying to determine
if the thefts were connected or related to a previous theft of a
2011 Mercedes Benz that occurred on Martinsville Road on Sept. 20.
A key fob had also been left in that vehicle prior to the theft,
with the vehicle later being recovered in Belleville, Reese
said.
"Information that has been gained from that investigation
suggests that an organized group has been targeting high end luxury
cars throughout the central New Jersey region," he added.
"We continue to encourage residents to lock their vehicles and
to not leave vehicle keys or key fobs in their vehicles," Reese
said.
