The arrival of the new CLA is set to make Mercedes-Benz’s entry-level sedan bigger.

In an era of downsizing and a shift towards smaller models Mercedes-Benz's biggest selling model is set to grow in size to give it breathing space to the new CLA baby sedan that the brand admits will cannibalise sales.

The all-new C-Class sedan and wagon due in 2014 are set to respond to the just unveiled CLA with bigger body.

While the low-slung roof of the so-called four-door "coupe" is CLA sits 43mm lower than that of the C-Class the CLA is 40mm longer and 7mm wider – and it will be positioned below the C-Class and priced about 10 per cent below its $58,600 starting price.

"Wait until we bring the new C-Class," said Mercedes-Benz's executive vice president of sales and marketing Joachim Schmidt, hinting that the next C-Class will be bigger in response.

"Be aware that we are knowing the sizes of our cars … so we make the right decisions. "

Despite the imminent expansion, Schmidt was adamant the C-Class – which competes with the likes of the BMW 3-Series, Audi A4 and Lexus IS – will retain its fun-driving nature that is seen as a key attribute that has helped boost its sales.

"It will certainly have the agility," he said.

And despite an acceptance of once-ignored front-wheel-drive in its range – including on the just-revealed, youth-focussed CLA baby sedan that will sit underneath the C-Class – Mercedes-Benz has vowed to stick to its roots and long standing traditions with established versions of future models.

That means more traditional rear-drive layouts on core models, including the brand's best selling model, the C-Class.

"Of course we will stay with rear-drive for the C-Class cars," said Mercedes-Benz chairman Dr Dieter Zetsche. "This is the right drivetrain to have."

Mercedes-Benz also confirmed the next generation C-Class would have V6 power, although there was no such confirmation on whether it would have a V8. The next C is also expected to follow the lead of other models in adopting hybrid propulsion.

Mercedes E-class series introduced with typical flair

Mercedes-Benz unveiled its new E-class cars today at the Detroit auto show with all the panache you might expect of the luxury automaker.

Dieter Zetche, chairman of Daimler, said the E, stood for emotion, efficiency and extra intelligence.

He touted the line's looks and digital features, which are "paving the way to autonomous driving. "

Zetche compared the elegance of the Steinway piano that musician Bruce Hornsby played to introduce the new models — which included a sedan, wagon, cabriolet, coup — and played off Hornsby's lyrics, saying that while the automaker was introducing new vehicles, "some things will never change."

On Sunday night, the automaker unveiled a concept with hints of its anticipated CLA-class sedan at the Westin Book Cadillac.

Mercedes' E-class luxury sedan and station wagon are getting substantial updates to compete with the Audi A6, BMW 5-series and Lexus GS.

A new, 2.5-liter four-cylinder diesel engine replaces the previous 3. 5-liter V6 to deliver high fuel economy, 190 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. V6, hybrid and V8 models also will be available.

Visual changes include optional LED headlights, broad LED taillights that emphasize the car’s width and two grille designs, one of which incorporates Mercedes' three-pointed star. A new character line along the sides echoes the profile of the SL roadster and SLS super car.

Available features include a binocular camera mounted behind the rearview mirror that generates a three-dimensional image for safety systems to identify vehicles and pedestrians.

The E-class sedan and wagon also get a stop-start system that shuts the engine off when idling to save fuel. A seven-speed automatic transmission is standard.

Mercedes' smaller E-class coupe and convertible share a number of the improvements, including the binocular vision, LED lights and stop-start. The coupe and convertible are available with either a 302-horsepower V6 or 402-horsepower twin-turbo V8.

In addition, the automaker also showed off the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG, a high-performance midsize sedan that goes on sale this summer.

Mercedes' E 63 AMG super sedan and wagon add an S-model featuring all-wheel-drive and an outrageously powerful 5.5L bi-turbo V8 that produces 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, delivering 0-60 m.p.h. acceleration in just 3.5 seconds.

Mercedes also adds its 4Matic all-wheel-drive system to the base E 63 AMG, which generates 550 hp and 531 lb-ft. The AWD system sends 67% of power to the rear wheels for rear-biased handling.

All E 63s come with a seven-speed automatic transmission, adjustable electronically controlled shocks, and rear air suspension. Visual cues include LED headlights, 10-spoke alloy wheels and the new-look AMG nose: large wings connecting to a Mercedes star in the grille and a complicated aerodynamic component below the grille that manages cooling air and increases down force.

Detroit motor show: ‘Mercedes must fight for F1 title in 2014′

Mercedes will be in a position to win the Formula One world championship in 2014, according to company boss Dieter Zetsche.

Speaking at the Detroit motor show, Zetsche admitted that the team’s results last year, where it finished fifth in the constructors’ championship and scored one win with Nico Rosberg, were not good enough.

«Formula One is a very visible platform, and there’s no doubt we spend a lot of marketing budget on competing as we consider it close to our core business,» said Zetsche.

«But as its so visible people see pretty quickly if you succeed or not, and if the results are up to your expectations. For Mercedes those expectations must be that we are up there at every race competing for victory.

«Even though we had one win last year, you cannot say we were in a position to be considered winners everywhere. So that is why we have made changes – a new driver, a new chairman and more to come.

«What we saw was that the engine was the best, or up with the best, and drivers who were among the best. The real problem lay with the chassis and we are working on that.

«The coming season will probably not allow us to show the full effect of the changes, but in 2014 we will have a good shot at the championship, especially with the new engine rules. Optimising the chassis and engine for that opportunity is key.

Herbert: Development key to Hamilton chances

Former F1 racer Johnny Herbert says that Mercedes needs to ensure there is no repeat of the development issues it suffered last season if it wants to give Lewis Hamilton a winning car for the 2013 season.

The Brackley-based team looked set to challenge at the front in 2012 after Nico Rosberg took victory in China, but a promising campaign tailed off dramatically as both Rosberg and Michael Schumacher then slipped further away from the pace as the season wore on.

Mercedes will hope there is no repeat during the upcoming campaign having signed 2008 title winner Hamilton to partner Rosberg in a new look line-up and Herbert said the team had to work hard to give the pair a car capable of challenging.

"For sure it will be Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren at the front and it is good for me to see Jenson Button getting the chance to lead McLaren this season," he told Crash.net when asked if he expected any surprises in the year ahead. "It is a very good opportunity for him to be able to lead the team into a second World Championship and there is potential for that to happen. On the other side, his team-mate from last year has left for Mercedes and Lewis is in a different situation.

"Yes he can lead the team, that is all well and good, but we haven’t seen a good Mercedes as yet. Development always seems to have been where they struggle and that is something that they will hope changes for 2013. Maybe the input in this year’s car from the team that Ross Brawn has put together in the past year or so will be the deciding factor in whether the car is a race winner.

"We know Lewis will get the best out of it and I think he’ll win a race or two, but he will want to win a World Championship. That is where we need to see if the core development team, the engineers and the designers, have been able to give him a car that will let him do that."

Many believe that 2014 could be the season when Mercedes come good thanks to new engine rules coming into force in F1, but Herbert was keen to point out that the engine would only be part of the package that the team needs to get right.

"People say that Mercedes will be in the best position for 2014 and they will have the best engine," he said. "That may be so, but they need a good car as well as there is no point having the best engine in a bad car. That is something they have to work on and hopefully it will be something that Lewis can utilise.

"Hopefully he can win races [before then] and considering the season we had last year, he could even win a second title. It will be very close and we saw how competitive Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren were last year but there is the potential for a mix-up, as the rules haven’t changed too much.

"That is a good thing as the grid will close up and it will be more difficult because it is so close and it will be tough for anyone to break away from the pack. If we can have a repeat of 2012, it would be an amazing thing to have again."

Herbert was speaking during the Autosport International Karting Challenge, with fundraising efforts for Alzheimer’s Society set to continue into February with an online auction of Mark Webber’s 2012 helmet, Johnny Herbert’s 2011 Nordschleife 24 Hours race suit, Johnny Mowlem’s Lotus F1 race suit and gloves, plus other motorsport memorabilia. Bids can be placed at .

Karlie Kloss and a Wild Horse Star in New Mercedes-Benz Key Visual

Another fashion week season, another awesome Mercedes-Benz key visual. Following the luxury vehicle manufacturer’s film-noir image for the MBFW fall 2012 season that starred the supermodel-superphotog pairing of Lara Stone and Alex Prager, fall 2013 takes Karlie Kloss into the wild world of Ryan McGinley. Merging raw nature, striking beauty and modern luxury, the buzzed-about photographer captures the 20-year-old supermodel «surrounded by an imposing landscape» with «dark clouds gathering ominously behind her.» Looking calm and cool in the unexpected scenery, she’s joined by two very different rides: a rearing white horse and the hot, new CLA-Class. See «Untamed» in its entirety after the jump.

Business hotel introduces world’s first smart hotel key

This is one hotel key you don't want to lose.

A new business hotel in Seoul has started using smartphones for hotel keys that also allow guests to surf the Internet and control room lights, television and temperature.

Hotel Skypark Central in Seoul's financial district launched the smart-key service on December 26, changing the locks and room controls in 16 of its rooms.

Guests pick up the smartphone when they check in at the front desk.

Smart buildings

"We wanted to do more technological advancement with smart buildings, so working with a hotel was a new initiative for us," said Dong-hui Lim, public relations representative for LG CNS, the IT service provider that developed the technology.

"It's convenient for guests, as they can control the room from outside the hotel, as well. For example, in winter, they'd be able to have the room heated before they came back to the hotel. "

Although a number of hotels around the world have placed tablets in rooms with similar capabilities for controlling room features, LG CNS and Hotel Skypark Central say this is the first time this particular technology has been used in a hotel anywhere in the world.

New tech

Dubbed Near-Field Communication (NFC, the new technology also allows hotels to monitor the environment of all rooms via a single management screen.

"We plan on implementing the service at two more hotels that we are planning on opening," said Hotel Skypark Central marketing representative Woo Hye-yeon.

"We had a brief testing period before we officially launched the service, and the users liked it a lot. They found it very useful."

Actual phone services aren’t enabled on the smartphone keys, but Wi-Fi is provided by the hotel at no extra charge.

Asked if guests would be worried about losing the smartphone key (the hotel won’t say what it will charge for a lost key, Lim said that may be the case for a short period, but added that in the future guests will be able to download an app on their own smartphones in order to use the service.

Smart Interlock System Prevents Human Error in Substations

 |

Press release date: January 14, 2013

Mountain View, California – Unitech Smart Interlock System is a computer-based interlocking system designed to minimize human switching errors in substations.

Smart Interlock System provides a real-time simulation system that accurately models the connectivity of the substation and verifies logic of switching sequences. Through simulation, each switching step is proven safe before switching takes place. With the unified standardized lock cylinder, the operator only needs to carry the Smart key to open all locks. By the use of RFID verification, the Smart Key enforces that the switching personnel operates the equipment in the correct sequence.

Content: Smart Interlock System (SIS is a computer based system designed to prevent human errors within substations. SIS consists of three main components, SIS host software, Smart Key and locking devices.

SIS host software has a user friendly graphical interface that simulates an operating order based on real-time equipment status and switching logic defined by customers. Through communication with RTU, SIS software displays a one-line diagram that reflects the real-time status of substation equipment. SIS host software uses AMEO programming language to express switching rule and interlocking logic for primary equipment within the substation. Using the real-time simulation system, each step of the operating order is verified, thus ensures the correctness of the operating order.

After simulation, the electronic operating order will be generated and transmitted to the Smart Key. With a unified lock cylinder, Smart Key is the single device that an operator needs for any substation operation. By following the operating order displayed on the Smart Key screen, the operator can easily locate designated devices. Smart Key ensures operations are carried out in the correct sequence and on the correct device by RFID verification.

SIS provides hundreds of locking devices and accessories to fulfill different interlocking requirements. All possible lock points are covered by the most suitable locking methodology ranging from regular padlock to control circuit lock. Each locking device can be uniquely identified by an embedded RFID chip. Unitech was established in 1991 and has over 24,500 deployments in substations, switch yards and power plants worldwide.
