Teachers have warned ministers that a crunch meeting to discuss pension demands will be the «last chance saloon» before a strike unless an agreement can be reached.
Teaching union EIS has accused the Scottish Government of «stalling» discussions about changes which they believe will lead to increased pension contributions, which they have dubbed an «austerity tax». Teachers also fear the changes could see them work beyond the age of 65.
Ministers and unions have failed to reach an agreement after eight months of talks, and teachers were said to be «furious» that the latest meeting earlier this week was cancelled at short notice. The EIS has accused the Scottish Government of «feet-dragging over formulating an offer on pensions».
Teachers were on the verge of launching immediate industrial action when the latest meeting was cancelled at short notice earlier this week, but have decided to give ministers a «final warning» of potential action ahead of the rescheduled meeting on December 10.
Commenting following an EIS Council meeting on Friday, general secretary Larry Flanagan said, «The very clear message from EIS Council members from across Scotland is that teachers and lecturers have had enough of the stalling by the Scottish Government on pensions.
«Council members gave very serious consideration to balloting members immediately on a return to strike action as a result of the Scottish Government’s latest delaying tactics.
«But EIS Council agreed, after a lengthy debate and subsequent vote, to give the Scottish Government one final chance to produce an offer and put it on the table at the meeting in the week beginning 10 December.
«But the EIS is clear, and John Swinney and Mike Russell also need to be clear, that this is absolutely the last-chance saloon for the Scottish Government – if they again fail to produce an offer on pensions, then talks will be at an end and an imminent return to industrial action is likely to follow. «
Meanwhile, the result of a strike ballot of hospital doctors over their pensions is expected on Wednesday. There are four separate ballots: consultants, junior doctors, staff associate, specialist and speciality doctors; and public health doctors.
The British Medical Association’s UK Council will meet after the results are announced to consider the results and decide on the next steps.
