New Report From iMomentous Explores the Impact of Smart Phones in the Workplace

HORSHAM, PA–(Marketwire – Nov 27, 2012 – iMomentous, delivering a highly scalable mobile recruitment technology platform that enables companies to recruit, retain and engage their talent, today announced the release of its latest research, «Smart Phones in the Workplace: The Impact of Mobile Technology on Workplace Communications. » The report details the results of a recent survey the company conducted about how professional workers utilize their smart phones to communicate with colleagues and access information at work.

The adoption rate of mobile devices has increased rapidly, with sales of these devices outpacing personal computers for the first time in 2011, and mobile web traffic expected to be greater than desktop traffic by 2015. In light of these statistics, iMomentous sought to find out how today’s professionals utilize their smart phones as the use of personal mobile devices in the workplace has become the norm rather than the exception.

«Our latest research shows that more people rely on smart phones to communicate in the workplace, and organizations must adapt their communication and engagement strategies to account for this new reality,» said Ed Newman, vice president of Strategy for iMomentous. «This trend is also driving the adoption of bring-your-own-device policies, which allow companies to leverage the productivity gains of mobile technology, without the need to provide and pay for these devices.»

In conducting its report, iMomentous surveyed 134 individuals across a range of job categories who are currently working and own a smart phone. Key findings about how these professionals utilize their smart phones in the workplace include:

  • An overwhelming majority (94 percent said they use their smart phones for both work and personal purposes. Six percent use their device for personal use only, and none of the respondents use their smart phone exclusively for work.

  • Only 10 percent of respondents reported that they are in front of a desktop computer all day, while 75 percent said they have access to their smart phones throughout the entire work day.

  • Although the laptop is the primary device for handling email, 30 percent of participants reported they use their smart phone as their primary source for reading email. Overall, 96 percent have used their smart phone to access email.

«While laptops and desktops remain the most used tools in the workplace, 15 percent of respondents believe smart phones have already become the primary device for workplace communications,» said Newman. «The growing use of smart phones and the resulting mobility of the workforce present a huge opportunity for companies to communicate with their employees — and keep them engaged — like never before.»
