Congress approves creation of EIS evaluation agency

Peru’s congress has approved the bill to create a national agency in charge of evaluating environmental impact studies (EIS, congress reported in a release.

The agency, to be called Senace, will be set up under the environment ministry (Minam and will take over EIS evaluation from the country’s energy and mines ministry (MEM.

According to Minam, Senace will boost competitiveness and efficiency, and entities such as the health, economy and agriculture ministries will be involved in the evaluation process.

Senace is expected to begin operating in mid-2013, after the regulations to implement the law have been drawn up.

The initiative will align Peru with other South American countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Columbia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Chile, Uruguay and Venezuela, where the evaluation of EISs is done by an independent, non-sector specific body.
