The Chinese and Icelandic business partners of an Invercargill project management company have arrived in the city and are impressed by the way Southlanders conduct business.
Cheng Jiang Hu and Xiaoli Qiu work for Duolin, a company in the Chinese city of Chengdu, while Jon Magnusson is the founder of Icelandic company MetalTech.
The delegates are guests of EIS, a company which works with industrial operations and provides support for project management, design, compliance, process control and consultancy.
EIS chief executive Dean Addie said his business partners were in the city to finetune a heater at the New Zealand Aluminium Smelters at Tiwai Point, a project with which they were all involved.
EIS completed several multimillion-dollar projects in New Zealand and used its experience creating the «stub heater» project at Tiwai to secure contracts at smelters overseas.
Mr Addie said he had been working with his Chinese partners, who had supplied the parts for the heater, for about six months. They had come to learn how to meet New Zealand specifications for the machinery.
«EIS plan to promote further relationships in Oceania, so they need to know how to produce parts specified for the region,» he said.
Mr Hu and Ms Qui had met members of the Invercargill City Council who had recently visited China and members of the Chinese consulate, who were also in the city this week.
«Progress towards a stronger relationship between Invercargill and China is already moving along quickly … they were looking at Southland’s industry and visiting business connections,» Mr Addie said.
Mr Hu was impressed with the number of Southland businesses that had taken on partnerships with Chinese businesses.
«He (Mr Hu comes from a city of 14 million people and was impressed at Southland’s strong business links and how it produced so much for such a `small’ region,» Mr Addie said.
Meanwhile, Mr Magnusson was in the city to oversee the commissioning of the stub heater, which his company had made.
He was also here to sign off on an international charter between his company and EIS because they had formed another company last week – Metaltech Oceania Ltd, of which Mr Addie was director.
«The company was formed so we could work together to launch products and services throughout Oceania,» Mr Addie said.
Mr Magnusson will spend three weeks in Southland going through the rules of engagement with EIS and planning for the future.
Mr Addie said Mr Magnusson told him Southland was an easy place to do business and the people were good to work with.
